Why No Single Sensor Is Enough
Every sensor technology has strengths and blind spots. A camera captures rich visual detail but struggles in rain, fog, and low light. LiDAR produces precise 3D maps but can be confused by highly reflective or transparent surfaces. Radar penetrates adverse weather reliably but lacks the resolution to classify fine object details.
Sensor fusion — the technique of combining outputs from multiple sensor types — is what allows autonomous vehicles (AVs) to perceive their surroundings reliably across a wide range of real-world conditions. Understanding each sensor's role is key to understanding how self-driving systems work.
LiDAR: The 3D Mapping Engine
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors emit rapid pulses of laser light and measure the time for each pulse to reflect back from a surface. By sweeping thousands of pulses per second across a wide field of view, LiDAR builds a dense, accurate 3D point cloud of the surrounding environment.
- Range: Typically 100–200 meters for automotive-grade units, with some long-range models exceeding 300m.
- Resolution: Can detect objects as small as a pedestrian at 50m with centimeter-level precision.
- Limitations: Performance degrades in heavy rain or snow due to laser scattering; spinning mechanical LiDARs are historically expensive and fragile, though solid-state LiDAR is rapidly maturing.
LiDAR is the primary sensor for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) — building real-time maps while tracking the vehicle's position within them.
Radar: All-Weather Reliability
Radio Detection and Ranging (Radar) emits radio waves and measures the reflected signal. Unlike light-based sensors, radio waves pass through rain, fog, dust, and darkness almost unimpeded, making radar an essential complement to LiDAR and cameras.
- Short-range radar (SRR): 0.2–30m range; used for parking assistance and blind-spot monitoring.
- Long-range radar (LRR): Up to 250m; critical for adaptive cruise control and highway emergency braking.
- Doppler measurement: Radar directly measures the radial velocity of objects, giving AVs an immediate sense of relative speed — something cameras and LiDAR must infer.
Cameras: The Visual Interpretation Layer
Camera systems in AVs do more than simply "see" — they classify and interpret what they see. Deep learning models running in real-time process camera feeds to identify traffic lights, road signs, lane markings, pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicle types.
- Monocular cameras – Single lens; depth must be inferred using motion cues or neural networks.
- Stereo cameras – Two lenses separated by a baseline distance; compute depth from disparity, similar to human binocular vision.
- Wide-angle and fisheye cameras – Near-field surround coverage for parking and intersection awareness.
High-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging is increasingly important for handling the jump from bright sunlight to shadowed tunnels without losing visibility.
Ultrasonic Sensors: The Close-Range Guard
Ultrasonic sensors emit sound pulses and measure echo return time. Simple, cheap, and highly reliable at short range (0.2–5m), they are the standard technology for parking sensors and low-speed obstacle detection in driveways and tight maneuvers.
How Sensor Fusion Works
Sensor fusion is handled at multiple levels in a modern AV stack:
- Data-level fusion – Raw sensor data is combined before processing (e.g., projecting camera pixels onto LiDAR point clouds).
- Feature-level fusion – Each sensor's output is partially processed to extract features (edges, detections), which are then merged.
- Decision-level fusion – Each sensor independently classifies objects; a master algorithm resolves disagreements between sensor outputs.
